Criminal law is composed of rules and statutes that govern certain prohibited acts. The government creates these rules to ensure that public safety and welfare are not threatened or harmed. Criminal law also governs the types of punishments that a person receives if they are convicted of a prohibited act.

The Criminal Rules of Procedure govern the framework of how criminal proceedings are to run.
